When To Choose an Emergency Center

Most injuries and medical emergencies take us by surprise. Whether it’s chest pain, or severe flu symptoms, we can sometimes be uncertain of where to go. Although urgent cares can handle a variety of medical problems, they should not be considered true emergency rooms. There are many symptoms that  require rapid and advance treatments, and are best evaluated in an emergency room.

These symptoms are best seen in an Emergency Room, such as Neighbors Emergency Center:

  • Persistent chest pain
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Severe abdomen pain
  • Fainting, or loss of balance
  • Difficulty speaking, or understanding speech
  • Sudden weakness or paralysis
  • Severe and sudden headaches
  • Falls that cause injury
  • Sudden vision changes
  • Deep cuts that leave large open wounds
  • Injury to the head, or eyes
  • Severe flu symptoms
  • High fevers, or fevers that cause rashes
  • Severe burns
  • Seizures (without an epilepsy diagnosis)

In some situations, it is best to call 9-1-1. It is common for people to avoid calling 9-1-1 because they are nervous, and not sure if it is an emergency. However, it is always better to be safe than sorry. Paramedics can often deliver life-saving treatment during heart attacks or strokes on the way to the hospital.

If you do find yourself headed to the emergency room, it is a good idea to have a prepared file, or online folder complete with your medical history. This includes a list of all your medications, including vitamins, supplements, and over-the-counter medicine. You should also keep a list of allergies with you, as well as paperwork on any medical surgeries or procedures from the past.  As emergency settings can be overwhelming, having this information on file can be very helpful to the physician trying to treat you, or a family member, in a timely manner.
