
What is strep throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection that causes the throat to become sore and scratchy. If left untreated it can cause other complications such as rheumatic fever, kidney inflammation, and even scarlet fever. While strep throat can affect all ages, it is most common in children.
What are the symptoms of strep throat?
Signs and symptoms of strep throat are similar in both adults and children and can include:
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting, especially in younger children
- Tiny red spots on the area at the back of the roof of the mouth (soft or hard palate)
- Body aches
When to see a doctor
You should seek medical attention if you or the person you’re with are experiencing any of the following:
- A sore throat that lasts longer than 48 hours
- Problems breathing or swallowing
- A sore throat accompanied by tender, swollen lymph glands
- Fever
- A sore throat accompanied by a rash
- If strep has been diagnosed and there has been no improvement after taking antibiotics for 48 hours
